Using barrel codes (such as those listed above) to date the manufacture are reliable on Remington rifles, as the company rarely changed barrels on a customer's rifle.
Remington Model 4 Serial Numbers
Using these barrel codes to date a shotgun is somewhat unreliable, as shotgun barrels are often interchanged at random. One needs to be sure that the barrel is original to the gun before trusting the Barrel Code listing, above.

| Posted: Mon Mar 07, 2016 10:32 pm The Remington Model 58 also called the Sportsman 58 is a semi-automatic shotgun manufactured by Remington Arms from 1956 to 1963. It was Remington's first gas operated shotgun and was manufactured in 12, 16, & 20 gauges until it was replaced by the Model 1100. The Gun Control Act of 1968 required that all newly manufactured firearms produced by licensed manufacturers in the United States and imported into the United States bear a serial number. Firearms manufactured prior to the Gun Control Act remained exempt from the serial number requirement. According to the ATF..the serial number must be conspicuously engraved, cast or stamped (impressed) on the firearm frame or receiver..(not the barrel). Barrels can be swapped out for any number of reasons, hence the receiver is stamped because it contains the parts that make a it a firearm. The only things that MUST be stamped on a barrel are the Guage, Caliber, Manufacturer, and Model Designation (if assigned). |
